An American citizen is a person that swear allegiance to the U.S. and is entitled to its protection of its laws. before the 1860's citizenship was not important to people living in the united states. 14th amendment was first constitutional definition. the constitution declares that a person becomes an 90% of americans are citizens by birth. Wong Kim Ark sued the supreme court because it says if you are born here you are a citizen no matter if your parents are a citizen or not. naturalization- legal process when a person can become a citizen of another country at some point after birth. usually naturalization is done individually, a person chooses to go through the process. collective naturalization- when entire groups are granted citizenship through en masse, granted citizenship through a treaty or an act. every American citizen has the right to voluntary abandon his/her citizenship: this is called expatriation. it is illegal for congress to take away citizenship for something you have done. naturalized citizens can lose their citizenship through denaturalization. marriage does not make a person a citizen it only shortens the time of the naturalization process. congress has exclusive power to regulate the crossing of this nations border. quotas for immigration began to exist- it limits the number of people allowed in the country. immigration act of 1965- did away with the quota system up to 270,000 immigrants are allowed into the U.S. each year. The immigration act of 1990 governs admission of aliens into the U.S. this act allows 675,000 immigrants into the U.S. each year, special preferences to people with occupational talent. some people get denied of coming to the U.S. deportation is legal process when aliens are required to leave country. biggest reason for deportation- illegal immigrant.

1. The peoples face in the picture are all different. The white police men are forcing the dog on to bite him. The African American's face shows fear.
